Super Saturday Rugby Festival

50th Anniversary Playing Season

Saturday 28 May 2022

On Saturday our 50th Playing Season came to a close with a special Day of Rugby, our very own Super Saturday. It was great to see all the age groups in the Club participating and having fun. A huge thanks to all who helped make it possible, but in particular Dougie Thomson and Gordon Muir for organising and Graham Murray for putting an incredible shift in to running the BBQ. Thanks also to West Port Veterinary Clinic, who were our sponsors for the day:

A big thanks also to all the players of the Forth Valley Select XV who came from Livingston, Falkirk, Grangemouth and Rugby Clubs and contributed to a highly entertaining game of rugby and to referee Paul Cyphus who handled with his usual aplomb.

The day started with Mixed Age Group 7s featuring the S1/S2 combined age group in one round robin competition with 4 teams and the S3/U16 combined age group in another competition.

Next up were the Wee Reds P4 team who took on a P4 Mum’s team who demonstrated some nice touches and a few underhand tricks! With plenty action and lots of excitement, the Mum’s ran out winners in a close game.

The Wee Reds P5s and P6s then took centre-stage with an exhibition run-out against a team of coaches.

Then a special 50th Anniversary Match in the time-honoured tradition of a President’s XV against a guest side.

At 3pm, a Linlithgow President’s XV (aka the Reds) took on a Forth Valley Select drawn principally from Grangemouth, Falkirk and Livingston Rugby Clubs, but also with two players from Edinburgh Napier University and one from Bo’ness Rugby Club.

The president’s team ran in 8 tries to 3 in a 52-15 win, with some great play from both sides. To the delight of the home fans, Gregor Stewart, playing in his last match before moving to Jersey, ran in a deserved hat-trick of tries to cap a fine performance.

After the match, the Reds players individually presented Club ties to the outgoing Wee Reds P7 players who are graduating to the Young Reds next season.

The P7s last match of the year was against a coaches select team. This was a tight affair with the P7s overcoming the ‘dark arts’ of the opposition and running out 6-5 winners!

All-in-all it was a great day and a great way to end the season. Enjoy the summer break!
