Saturday 08 February 2020
A combination of the 6 Nations and Storm Ciara meant that the only rugby played last weekend were the Young Reds’ matches on Saturday morning. A clean sweep of 4 wins from 4 matches played was the excellent outcome, as the Young Reds head into the holiday weekend with heads held high!
There were wins for the S1s, S2s and U15s at Crieff against Morrison’s Academy and the U18s proved too strong for Musselburgh in their match at Mains Park.
Young Reds Dig Deep for Late Win
Morrison’s Academy S1 14 – 15 Linlithgow S1
Report by Stewart McLeod
It was a bitterly cold day for the Linlithgow S1 squad to make the trip through to Crieff to play Morrison’s Academy. Even with a few players missing to birthdays and injury, they were able to take 20 kids through with them.
Unfortunately for the Young Reds we carried the cold weather into the start of a game that was going to be our toughest for some time. The opening period of the game was a series of probing attacks from both teams as they eased themselves into the game. However some strong, direct running from Morrisons saw them make the first break through for a try. The Young Reds did respond with a well worked try of their own, but two further tries were leaked through poor first-up tackling. That took the Young Reds into half time at 11-4 down and defensively they just hadn’t turned up.
However the break arrived at the right time and the Young Reds had the chance to assess what had gone wrong and how they could address it. This was to prove key and the second half was different affair. Our lads were on it from the whistle and quickly asserted themselves into the game with some strong tackling and rucking. This built a good base for the boys to work from and, over the course of the second half, they scored three tries to Morrison’s one (the last of which was a scrum against the head in the final minute of the game which allowed our scrum half to dive over… talk about leaving it late!).
Taking account of conversions, the Young Reds ran out winners with a score of 15-14.
So a game that could have gone either way, against an energetic and well organised Morrisons team, was won by the Young Reds right at the close. The Linlithgow lads certainly had to dig deep and show real character!
U18s Too Strong for Musselburgh
Linlithgow U18 59 – 5 Musselburgh U18
Report by Graeme Miller
Saturday the 8th of February saw Linlithgow U18’s take on Musselburgh at home on the top pitch. With the home side only being able to field 13, Musselburgh gave us a player from their 15 man squad to play 14 aside match. It was the away team who started stronger with a great set of phases resulting in a try after 4 minutes. However, from then on Linlithgow started to dominant play and ran in 9 tries and kicked 7 conversions from full back Cammy. Final result being 59-5.
Four tries in the first half and five in the second with the home side going back to their 13 players as Musselburgh needed their player back through injury. Centre Lewis led the charge with 5 tries and playing next to him, Aidan scoring two. Stand off Gregor and full back Cammy crossing the whitewash also giving Linlithgow their points all through the backs.
Special mention should go to second row Cullen who turned out this morning for the first time after a three month lay off and had two brilliant breaks showing fantastic pace! Centre Aidan also for his cut eye brow from the last play of the game but we cannot forget to mention our home referee Ken who not only referreed consistently but also managed to get himself knocked over. We have it on video Ken!!
Great display of rugby from both sides and thanks also to our parent helpers providing the catering.
Morrisons S2 19 – 66 Linlithgow S2
Another dominant performance from the strong S2 side as they ran in 10 tries to 3 in a very open game in Crieff.
Morrisons U15 12 – 41 Linlithgow U15
The U15s are a side transformed this season and they continued in fine fettle with another big win.
