Young Reds Claim Another Big Away Win
Royal High u18 19 – 22 Linlithgow u18
Saturday 29 February 2020
Report by Graeme Miller
On Saturday the U18’s travelled to Royal High School in Edinburgh with a 16 man squad matching their opposition. With most other games cancelled for waterlogged pitches ours went ahead but it was very obvious within the first few minutes that the pitch was extremely soft. This was not a day for throwing the ball out to the wings although Linlithgow tried moving the ball more than Royal High. Their game plan was to bash up the middle, which worked to start with as they scored a try after 3 minutes and then another after 10 minutes, converting just one. Our boys slack tackling allowing this to look easier than it was. Linlithgow, however, started to play through their own phases which resulted in Flanker Chris crashing over after 15 minutes and then Captain Jamie from No. 8 scoring just before half time to leave Royal High with a slender 12-10 lead.
Both teams got bogged down in the now ploughed field as the second half progressed. Linlithgow were now playing with more possession and territory and scored again through stand-off Gregor to go in front for the first time after 15 minutes of the 2nd half with full back Cammy converting to make it 17-12 for the Young Reds.
The Royal High boys weren’t finished and fought back through another try and kick on 25 minutes leaving the Young Reds 19-17 down with only 10 minutes to go. Through some good phases of play from our centres Aidan and Lewis, and the pack hitting up the middle, stand-off Gregor managed to cross the white wash with 5 minutes to go taking back the lead 22-19. That’s how it ended once the referee decided to finish this closely fought battle.
Well done to both sides for trying to play in such poor conditions.
