Excellent Win for U18s in Scottish Schools’ Plate Competition
Linlithgow U18 33 – 5 Hillhead / Jordanhill U18
Thursday 10 October 2019
On a very wet night both teams turned out with squads of 18 each and the game was evenly matched for the first twenty minutes. Then Linlithgow started to turn pressure into points, after 23 minutes with Captain Jamie going over with Gregor converting. Then seven minutes later Gregor himself crashed over and converted his own try.
14-0 at half time.
During the half, there were a few forward disagreements which resulted in one of the Hills boys lifting his fists and, through a referee and coach discussion, that particular player took no further part and scrums went to uncontested. Not something that any team wants to be associated with, but in true rugby values everyone just got on with the game.
The Hills Boys continued to move the ball around in the terrible conditions but didn’t make much ground although they did break some initial tackles. Countering this Linlithgow scored two tries through the backs, firstly from centre Kyle after 5 minutes, then Aiden going over after 20 minutes with Gregor converting to make it 26-0 to the Young Reds.
Unfortunately Linlithgow continuously started giving the Hills team penalty after penalty resulting in the referee giving two of our players a rest on the touchline.
With Linlithgow down to 13, Hills gained a try right on 30 minutes but the home side weren’t finished and with continuing pressure Aidan scored on full time with Gregor converting, for a final score of 33-5 to the Young Reds.
Lessons to be learnt should be to play to the conditions, attacking from the right parts of the pitch and to accept the referee decisions at all times.
