u18’s First Game of 2017
Lomond School (Helensburgh)
Saturday 21 January 2017
For the first match of the New Year the Reds faced a long trip to Helensburgh having only twelve players to board the bus. The hosts opened strongly and in the early exchanges scored two well worked converted tries to race into a 14 point lead with the Reds hardly touching the ball. The Reds woke up and Sam backed up well to score a try following a good break from Kieran.
Kieran then added a quick second after a strong break from half way saw him score close to the posts before he added the extras to tighten the score to 14 -12. Lomond then cut loose on the run up to half time scoring 3 tries and 2 converted to take the score out to Lomond 35 Reds 14.
Just before half time Kieran grabbed his second try of the match with some good foot work crossing wide out he then added the extras.
Half time: Lomond School u18 35 – 19 Linlithgow Academy u18
The half time talk was lively amongst the players who felt they could improve in the second half. Scott grabbed a try early after a good line bust he backed himself to finish with pace wide out. Kieran converted giving the Reds new hope.
Lomond responded with another burst of three quick tries which took the game away from the Reds. Callum crashed over for a final Reds try and despite having two late yellow cards Lomond defended well to close out the game.
Full Time: Lomond School u18 50 – 31 Linlithgow Academy u18
A high scoring game with both teams playing a twelve a side game meant lots of open space. The Reds battled well with several players playing out of position. This was the main difference in the end as Lomond had a more settled side and made good use of that. Hopefully player availability will improve over the next couple of weeks and allow the team to move into the second half of the season.
