U18s Fine Win with Late Try

High School of Glasgow 22 – 24 Linlithgow

Saturday 29 January 2022

Report by Phil Findlater

Despite being left behind in Linlithgow (the bus left without them after they were given an incorrect departure time), the U18s managed to track down some transport, thanks Tony, David & Simon, and made it through to Glasgow with just some time to spare before kick-off!

With the Yellow Weather warning in place the Reds won the toss and decided to receive the kick off with the elements (50 mph winds and driving rain) in their favour!!!???

The boys went through their playbook well and had patience this week where they went through the phases with some great drives and set up play which resulted in a try for Kinloch after 10 minutes. Conor missed with the conversion, but the swirling storm was not conducive to the art of goal kicking!

There seemed to be a relaxing across the team after the score and HSoG came back at us and scored an easy try as we eased off the pedal! No conversion. The boys had a small “hair dryer” discussion and got back to normal service and Conor scored a cracker of a try cutting through the defence to touch down – No conversion. We seemed to go to sleep again and HSoG scored 2 more unconverted tries to go into the lead 15-10

Another regrouping and the team focussed again on our set play winning good ball in the middle of the pitch and from this Ross cut a great line, just like in training, to barge over the line under the posts with Conor judging the wind well, to convert. HT 15-17

In the 2nd half HSoG upped their temp or we reduced ours? But we also started to give away silly, needless penalties which kept us pinned back in our own half only for our opponents to take advantage of one of these phases of pressure to score and convert under the posts (22-17).

What was great to see was a “never say die” attitude from the team, something that was missing at the start of the season, as they dug deep and rebuffed attack after attack, despite providing some easy penalties and possession to HSoG, with solid defending!

With the clock ticking down we gained the ball on the half way line and made good metres down the middle only for Alex to pick it up from the ruck and drive through the defence to score under the posts which Conor duly converted.

Full Time 22-24

A fantastic score from a match where it seemed we were the better team, but didn’t capitalise on it! That said our defence and grit were fully evident and a well deserved victory for the boys!
