Under 16s Lose Out by One Conversion in Hawick
Hawick u16 17 – 15 Linlithgow u16
Saturday 22 December 2018
The Young Reds U16’s travelled the 50 miles down to Hawick on Saturday to play for the first time on a full size 3G artificial pitch. As the ball bounced around the two teams fought out a very evenly balanced game. It wasn’t until 21 minutes that either side got on the scoresheet, with Hawick crossing for an unconverted try to take a 5-0 lead. However, the Young Reds struck back straight away with Gregor going over after a great backs move through the middle of the defence. 5-5 at half time.
The Young Reds started the second half a bit better and scored first on 10 minutes through Darren. Then they took the foot off the pedal, knocking on in contact and not clearing out the break downs quickly enough. Hawick hit back with two quick tries, one of them converted to give them a 17-10 lead with 10 minutes to go.
The Young Reds rallied and Callum E crashed over on 24 minutes – genuinely crashed over through two defenders! Unfortunately all of the Young Reds’ tries were scored pretty far out from the posts and they didn’t manage any conversions, so the match finished 17-15 to Hawick, thanks to their one successful conversion.
The Young Reds did finish the game early with a minute and a half on the clock as their full back Kyle took a sore one, so for safety reasons we all agreed to call it a day. Happy to report he is alright though. Great competitive game and fantastic hospitality from Hawick – complete with a leaving present of “Hawick Balls!” Looking forward to a re-match.
