Young Reds Give it All in Schools’ Cup
Linlithgow Academy U16 22 – 34 High School of Dundee U16
Wednesday 10 October 2018
On Wednesday night, Linlithgow Academy U16s took on the High School of Dundee U16 in the Scottish Schools Cup at Mains Park. The Young Reds had beaten Glasgow Academy in the previous round in an exciting match which they thoroughly deserved to win.
After an even start, the visitors scored three tries in the first half, firstly on 18 minutes, then 23 and finally on 29. It looked like the Young Reds were facing 19-0 at half time, however the boys struck back with some great movements down the outside resulting in a try for Aaron. 19-5 at half time.
Unfortunately for the Young Reds, Dundee scored first in the second half, after 6 minutes, but again the Young Reds rallied and Ewan scrambled and burst over from continued pick and drives after 8 minutes. (24-10). Then again the Young Reds slipped off a few tackles not coping with the visitors’ pace and let in two tries on 15 & 19 minutes.
Dundee maybe thought it was over at 34-10, but Charlie drove over from No. 8 and finally Callum M scrambled over from our continued pressure and Gregor kicked the conversion from outside the 15.
The Young Reds had all the pressure in the last 10 minutes and the Dundee coach said another 5 minutes and the Young Reds might have caught them. The cup tie finished up 34-22 to Dundee. A great game played with fantastic, positive play especially from the Young Reds defending and never giving up.
Congratulations to Dundee who move forward to the next round of the Scottish Schools’ U16 Cup.
Coach Graeme summed it up saying “Very proud of the boys tonight for putting everything on the line against a very strong, quick and large High School of Dundee squad. Particular mention for Ross and Daniel for turning out for us and Michael for playing through the pain barrier. Everyone defended with their lives but without our own possession we were living off scraps.”
