Young Reds Match Their Senior Counterparts
Berwickshire Academy Duns U16’s 0 – 45 Linlithgow U16’s
Saturday 23 February 2019
Saturday morning saw an early departure for the 19 player Linlithgow squad into the heart of Borders’ rugby. The first 15 minutes was a physical battle with both teams trying to exert their game plan on the other.
Linlithgow soon began to take a foothold in the game, but were a little guilty of playing in the opposition’s half whilst failing to turn their dominance into points until 2nd row forward Rory Meikle burst through to score the first try of the match which was converted by Fly Half Gregor McLean.
Soon after this passage of play, an early departure for the No 10 ensued, with a dislocated finger, and the No 10 shirt was handed to Oli Mole. Two Linlithgow tries in quick succession came 10 mins later, one try from centre Lewis Wells, converted by Oli Mole, and one try from No 8 Michael Thomson. This saw the dominant Linlithgow team go in 19-0 at half time.
The second half saw the Duns players put up a brave and spirited fight to gain a foothold in the game, however Linlithgow were to strong an opponent, running in another 4 tries whilst playing good attacking rugby. Scorers were winger Callum Evans, centre Ewan Curran, fly half Oli Mole and winger Darren Mitchell, topped up with 3 conversions from Oli Mole.
Linlithgow were deserved winners 45 -0 against an opposition who played their hearts out right to the final whistle, but were beaten by a better side on the day.
The Young Reds win came a week after the Reds senior team had defeated Duns 40 -28 in a Tennents’ East 1 league match.
