S2s v Morrisons (Dec 19)

Young Reds S2s Warm Up a Freezing Day with Sparkling Rugby

Linlithgow S2  77 – 19  Morrisons Academy S2

Saturday 14 December 2019

Report by Mark Osborne

On a bitterly cold day the Young Reds’ S2s took on a very good Morrison Academy side on the Upper Mains Park pitch.  With Morrison coming with only 13, the Young Reds were able to give them 2 players to make it a full 15-a-side match, thanks to Ethan and Finn from the S1s boosting the Young Reds’ numbers. With 2 or 3 players taking turns to bolster the Morrison side a great 3 fifteen minutes sessions of rugby was played in trying conditions.

In the first third, Jack (2), Fraser, Caiden and S1 Ethan put the tries away, with Linlithgow playing some fantastic open play rugby.  Morrisons has some really good backs but were constantly under pressure as Linlithgow were aggressive in defence and the fitness training really flowed through as all the team got round the pitch well.

The second session continued in the same vein with Fraser (2), Caiden and Jack going over for tries.  Wingers Charlie and Rory had some big runs ensuring retention of the ball.  Tackling across the team meant Morrison’s had to work for every yard and the defence was a real team effort.

In the last session, the Young Reds played with 14 against 15 with Jack, Johnny and Caiden playing for Morrison’s to level up the game.  In spite of freezing cold hands this turned into a cracker of a last 15 minutes.  In a very open but tight game, Caiden, Jack and a very good Morrison’s player scored tries for Morrisons, with Fraser (2) and Daniel also getting on the score sheet.  In the last minute, our “captain fantastic” Daniel went on a 50 yard jinking run through most of the Morrison’s team to score a perfect individual try to win the last third session for the Young Reds.

Overall the score was 77-19.  Proud the boys played some fantastic rugby and with 8 boys helping out Morrison’s at different times. The winner today was just some spectacular rugby in spite of the cold rain that made conditions challenging.

Thank you to Ethan and Finn from the S1s for helping out and also to Under 18 Ali Cochrane who reffed a great game of rugby.  I mention the try scorers for the record, but I loved the effort put in by all the team in a brilliant “everybody together” performance!
