Young Reds S1s Win Season Opener
Saturday 31 August 2019
The first outing of the year for Linlithgow S1 was a short away trip to Royal High. The boys had been itching to get a game, having put in some hard graft in training over the past few weeks. However, like their heros in the Scotland team, they were perhaps a wee bit rusty after a summer off and there’s plenty for us to work on in the coming weeks.
The game started extremely well from our point of view. We had the lion’s share of the ball in the first half and were moving it around and stretching the Royal High defence. The boys quickly scored four unanswered tries to take the lead and it looked like we could potentially run away with the game.
However the second half was a far closer affair and some poor handling at times meant we missed out on a number of scoring opportunities. As the half went on the lads also lost a lot of their structure in attack and defence – I believe this is largely because of the rolling substitutions the coaches were putting on to give all the boys plenty of game time …. something for the coaches to work on in coming weeks.
As the game progressed Royal High did come back into it and the final score was a win for Linlithgow by 6 tries to 3.
For their first game of the year this was a tremendous day for the S1. They played some fantastic rugby and represented themselves and their school extremely well. They also managed to live up to their new S1 Team Code which they’d set for themselves the week before.
The try scorers were Finlay B, Finlay S (2), Ruairi, Rory and Jack.
