Reds v Blues – 26 December 2018

Age Before Beauty!

Reds (over 21s)  46 – 15  Blues (under 21s)

Wednesday 26 December 2018

On Wednesday, the Rugby Club was host to the traditional Boxing Day fixture. This match has its origins in a school vs recent former pupils challenge for the Academy Cup. However in recent years with new age grade playing restrictions it has become an adult only fixture, with the recent school leavers (U21s) team taking on an over 21 select.

The two teams, captained by Euan Mochrie (Over 21 Reds) and Ross Tulloch (Under 21 Blues), lined up in perfect weather and ground conditions for the time of year – a warm winter’s day, with a light wind and even a pale sun at kick-off.

Jack Frame steps his way to his first try

It took a while for the players to work the festive cheer out of their systems and, as a consequence, the first half, although full of enterprise and effort, was largely error strewn with numerous knock-ons and fumbled passes. Both sides had good spells of pressure, however it was the Reds who finished on top with a fine solo try from Jack Frame which he converted himself. On a couple of other occasions the Reds were close to scoring, however the half finished at 7-0 for the Reds and everything to play for in the second.

Cammy Dori-Muir runs in his try

The third quarter was all Reds as they scored four fine tries through Russell Murdoch, Cameron Dori-Muir, Cal Thomson and Jack Frame, with two being converted – Cal Thomson with a beautiful touchline strike and Euan Mochrie with a shot from in front of the sticks. The Reds were shipping the ball out along the line well and strong running from Bruno Mochrie and Cameron Dori-Muir and others were punching holes in a tiring Blues’ defence.

At this stage it was 31-0 to the Reds and not looking good for the youngsters. However the Blues suddenly sprung into life, fired up by excellent runs from Aidan Rennison, Drew Sommerville and Hoochy Tulloch. In the space of 5 minutes they claimed three excellent tries through Euan Conlan, Kyle Forsyth and Drew Sommerville, but unfortunately no conversions were successful, which left the score 31-15 to the Reds.

In the last ten minutes, the Reds re-established their superiority with tries from Rory McAdam, Euan Mochrie and Jack Frame, who completed his hat-trick with 2 minutes to go. A really enjoyable game of rugby and a great way to finish off the year. Thanks to all the players and to the match officials, Jon Blundell and Ken Richardson.
