Wee Reds Minis P7 at North Berwick

Sunday 09 September 2018

The new P7 squad had their first tournament of the year today down at North Berwick. It was a cracking day with the sun shining and some strong teams in attendance. After just a few weeks training it was always going to be a challenge for the Reds to start strongly.

However, we did just that! The opening game was against Stewart’s Melville and it was a closely fought affair. Ultimately our lads lost out, but if we’d been a bit more urgent in the ruck and tackle then it could have been a different story.

Next up we’re Musselburgh and the Wee Reds upped their game another notch. There were some great tries from both teams and it was really in the balance, but with a couple of minutes to play the lads turned the screws in defence and won a hard turnover that ultimately led to a try. We ended up winning by 4 tries to 2.

We had a short break then before our next two games… whether it was from food intake, break from play or heat exhaustion… we lost our edge. The next two games were tough going against Dunbar and North Berwick Law, who were both very good teams. The boys struggled somewhat and we ultimately lost both games. Though it’s worth noting that we scored against Dunbar, the only try that they conceded all day!

So we had to regroup. The coaches had to have a rethink and the boys had to find their edge again. A wee change in approach and a focus on having fun seemed to do the trick. Our next game was against Edinburgh Accies and whilst we lost by a try, we were the better team without a doubt. The urgency and flair in attack was back.

The boys carried that into the final game against North Berwick Bears where we hit our stride for the fist time today. Finally the lads rucked and chased the ball and won some turnovers. We won the game by three tries and it could have easily been many more.

All in all the lads played well today when their minds were in it…a wee bit focus, and some more training and this is a promising start to our year.
