Wee Reds P4s Crowned Champions at Edinburgh Accies Tournament!

Sunday 19 April 2017

LRFC P4s took a team to play this weekend at New Fields for Edinburgh Accies Mini Tournament. The conditions were mostly dry, the pitches were wide and in great condition allowing for expansive running rugby.

The competition was well structured into two pools where the Wee Reds were drawn in difficult Pool 1 against Accies blues, Stewart Melville, North Berwick and Watsonians.

P4s have been focusing this season on developing our evasive offloading game, tackling skills individually plus the importance of organisation and line speed as a defensive unit. This has led on to introducing the ruck, to contest the breakdown and regain possession. So a great opportunity to put collective efforts to the test against the Edinburgh clubs.

The first match against Accies started slowly with anticipation, confidence grew with some good hands leading to a succession of clever tries, the Reds ran away comfortable winners 6-3.

The second game against Stewarts Melville was closely contested with attritional direct running from the opposition requiring our defence to constantly reset and stay focused. Great tackling, sniping and recycling won this game in the end 3-2.

The Wee Reds third game was a stern test which proved to be decisive, lining up against an excellent North Berwick team who had won their first three games. The Wee Reds tackled hard and worked relentlessly as a team to contain a North Berwick side who had also scored highly in each of their previous games. Possession and the score line changed hands repeatedly. The Wee Reds held a 3-2 lead going into the final play of the game but were unfortunately unable to hold out with North Berwick scoring a last gasp try to snatch a 3-3 draw.

Watsonians were excellent at the breakdown securing fast ball from the ground but again defensive persistence paid off and the boys built up a commanding 4-1 lead. In the second half stamina was called into question as Watsonians clawed their way back with a couple of late tries to give the score a veneer of respectability. The Wee Reds held out 5-3 to secure top position in the group and a well-earned place in the final against Preston Lodge.

It was a long tournament to retain concentration levels, rotation of the squad helped to keep momentum up- as well as a few bananas, cakes and boxes of smarties!

In the final Linlithgow set about tackling everything that moved to keep a clean sheet. A 5-0 score line suggests that it was a one sided affair- the reality was anything but. In the first half Preston Lodge twice put the Wee Reds under sustained periods of intense pressure on their try line, twice we were able to hold them before breaking out and scoring a try. Our passing quick ball out of the tackle was exceptional with the third try being the pick of the bunch. It involved four consecutive off loads from four strong tackles before Preston Lodge ran out of defenders, the Wee Reds used the overlap to cross and score comfortably in the corner.

The boys worked exceptionally well together each contributing to the intensity with which the team played to remain unbeaten on the day. This excellent all round performance saw the Wee Reds collect winners medals and the P4 shield from Edinburgh Rugby Pro team player Tom Brown – not something we see everyday!

Well done boys – all the coaches and supporters were very proud of your achievement.
