2s v Lismore (Sept16)

Reds 2s Thrill Spectators with Powerful Performance

Linlithgow 2nd XV  86 – 7  Lismore 2nd XV

Saturday 03 September 2016

This was a sparkling performance by the 2s in a match that was much more closely contested than the score suggests. Lismore started the match with 15 players and 2 subs, but by the end were down to 11 of their own supported by 4 Reds subs.

Lauchlan McCall, making his senior rugby debut, had a tremendous match, the hooker to the fore both in attack and defence. However, it was the Walker brothers, Ally and Cammy, along with Eric Williams, recently arrived from the States, who stole the show in an entertaining match which featured 15 tries in total.

Indeed, Williams had claimed a hat-trick on his debut within 19 minutes, going on to score a further try in the second half to take his total to 4 tries. However, his total of 20 match points was eclipsed by winger Cammy Walker who also claimed a hat-trick of tries and 8 conversions to rack up 31 points! Several of his conversions were drilled over the bar, one dipping so viciously after passing over the bar, that the touch judge had to duck to avoid being decapitated!

Many of the Reds tries came from deep with a combination of power running and excellent support play capped with real pace out wide. Captain Gus McNab revelled in the open play and added his own try before withdrawing from the match with tight hamstrings. The power running of Williams in the centre was a revelation, as was the outstanding play of flanker Ally Walker who continuously knocked back Lismore players in the tackle in defence and made a number of trenchant runs in attack giving him a brace of tries.

2nd XV team manager, Des Martin, was able to rotate his players regularly to give good game time to the 15 starters and 5 subs. Credit to Lismore though – they kept battling away, taking the ball into the Reds’ 22 on several occasions and scoring a well deserved try early in the second half. Referee Peter Robertson had a fine match and helped ensure that the game flowed and was entertaining to watch.
