2s Close Out their Season with an 11 Try Win

Linlithgow 2s  67 – 0  Forrester 2s

Saturday 13 April 2019

Match report by Des Martin

The last fifteens game of the season saw a strong Reds’ 2s team take the field against the visitors from Forresters. The Club President Ken Richardson was allocated to referee so everyone was looking forward to an entertaining game. The weather was bright and sunny and ideal for flowing rugby.

The game kicked off with the Reds playing down the park with the wind and from the first few moves Jeff Martin chipped behind the defence and Robbie Thomson chased the kick down.  From the resultant scrum to the Reds the ball game out and Ally Walker pounced and brushed of a couple of half tackles to score below the posts. Jeff Martin converted to make it 7-0 to the Reds. From the next passage of play Kieran Cochrane broke down the touchline made at least 25 metres, flipped the ball inside to Ross Martin who in turn passed to Euan Mochrie who sprinted in behind the posts to score a try, converted by Jeff Martin.  14-0 to the Reds.

Ally Walker claimed the Reds’ opening try

The day became a bit of a demonstration of rugby where the Reds all tried to retain their shape and play in the pattern instead of acting as individuals. This served them very well with the Forrester team chasing the ball and getting nowhere.

Linlithgow scored another try by Robbie Thomson and Cammy Walker scored two of his eventual hat-trick with strong forceful running. Chris Ronalson then finished off a great move involving all of the backs.  Jeff Martin converted all but one of these to leave the score at half time 40-0 to the Reds.

The Reds were playing up hill and into the strong breeze in the second half, which makes passing easier but kicking more difficult, and so it proved. Some great interlinking play with Andrew Archer and Euan Mochrie saw Mochrie score again, Jeff Martin converted and the score was 47 points to 0.

The Forrester team were struggling with injuries and down to 13 or 14 men for quite a period of the second half. The Manager asked the referee and Forrester what they wanted to do, with the Reds well in front, but to their credit Forrester wanted to continue to the end.

Adam Scott crashes over

Until the final whistle went the Reds scored a few more tries, Adam Scott the prop scored a good try from loose play, Cammy Walker scored his third and a hat trick for him on the day.

The biggest cheer was reserved for Kevin McLaughlin who scored a try on his second game of rugby and with praise from the Manager for taking it right behind the posts to ensure maximum points.  Unfortunately Jeff Martin’s kicking skills deserted him and he managed to miss one of the easier kicks of the day.

Andrew Archer scored a final try on the day to leave the score 67 points to 0 for the Reds. The referee called time and everyone retired to the Club satisfied with the last outing of the year.  That is apart for the speedy boys who have a couple of sevens competitons before the season finally comes to a close.
