2s Claim Another Good Away Win
MorePort XV 24 – 29 Linlithgow 2s
Saturday 10 December 2016
The seconds traveled to Calvary Park to play a mixed Portobello / Lismore side nicknamed “MorePort”. The Linlithgow team had struggled for players and the manager was glad big Donald Bennie was making his debut for the season taking the team up to 14 players. The “Haddocks” made it in time this week having still managed to get lost inside a mile from the pitch.
Donald Bennie started at number 10 with the instructions not to attempt to play running rugby but to keep the team in the oppositions half. This instruction was attempted but often the players seemed to take the wrong option by trying to drive the ball over the line. Eventually we put the ball down the line and Connall Black gave Sam McAllister a nice inside ball and he jinked in for a score.
The conversion was missed. 5 -0
After a sustained period of pressure with some good runs by Robbie Thomson and Connor, the Linlithgow side were given a scrum put in. Stuart Young hooked the ball cleanly and Gus McNab picked up and passed the ball to stand off Donald Bennie who barged his way over stretching for the line. The conversion was made. 12-0
The Linlithgow side relaxed as is often the case and MorePort broke through in the centre and scored 12 -5. The game ebbed back and forward as MorePort gained confidence and the Manager was glad that Robbie Thomson and Donald Bennie kept pinning them back towards their own half with some astute kicks. From one Linlithgow line out on the MorePort line Drew Sommerville, who had now woken up and decided to apply himself, drove over for a good score. 17-5
It looked as if Linlithgow should march on and score more points leaving MorePort in their wake. Unfortunately the guest player allocated to replace Kevin Wilson who had twisted his knee did not really make much of an effort to stop their star player and MorePort scored again. 17-12 and MorePort were back in the game.
Donald Bennie and the backs took the game to the More Port 22. Robbie Thomson put the ball into touch for our line from a penalty and Drew Sommerville caught well, the Reds started to march forward with Hugh Cochrane, our vintage prop, moving at a pace and in a place familiar to him as ball inched towards the line. The opposition realising our team were going over pulled down the ruck illegally and the Referee awarded a penalty try. 24-12.
MorePort game back and scored again and but Lachlan McCall and the forwards had got another try from a loose ruck. The final score ended up 29-24 and the rest of the Team and the Manager were glad the game had ended with a victory for Linlithgow. It was one of those games where the fact little rugby had been played for the last month did not help. Hopefully next week the team will play better.
