Reds 2s Just Fall Short
Lasswade 2s 22 – 19 Linlithgow 2s
Saturday 28 September 2019
Match report by Des Martin
The day was excellent for rugby and the seconds set off for the second week around the Edinburgh bypass. This time it was to Lasswade, a side we had always found difficult to beat away from home. The team had a number of changes from the previous week with both Walker brothers unavailable, Jeff Martin away for work and some other regulars missing. That said a strong team went out to play Lasswade. Lasswade had a first team home game so there was lots of activity at the club and the Reds were on the top second team park which was in excellent condition.
The game started as the manager expected with Lasswade using the experienced and weighty forwards to batter the Linlithgow line with continuous rucks and scrums. Before long the Fijian number 8 reached out despite the despairing tackles of Adam Scott and Stu Young, to score out wide. 5 nil against the Reds but they carried well up the park and succeeded in achieving a number of penalties. Russell Murdoch gained the Reds good ground were we had the opportunity to kick for goal and opted for a scrum in front of the posts. However Lasswade won the ball and came back down the park again. A lapse in concentration let the Fijian pick up from the loose ruck run through the middle as there were no guards and trot below the posts for another score to make the score 10-0 to Lasswade. The Reds set of back down the park and Adam Scott always dangerous from close range burst through to score. The conversion was missed.
Lasswade who had some dangerous players made use of their fleet of foot centre to return and score another try which was converted. 17-5 to Lasswade at half-time.
The Manager made some changes to see if this would improve the situation with Gary Laing coming on in the front row, Calum McKeown on at prop and Sam Buckley on at wing forward. Guy Sutherland came on for Kai Lenders on the wing.
Before the team had settled in to the second half, Lasswade scored another try to leave the score 22-5 to them and Manager was worried that more might come from Lasswade. But the Reds started to function better with Finbar Conway catching some good balls in the lineout, Sam Buckley assisting the others in tackling and knocking down the Lasswade players which soon resulted in Guy Sutherland taking advantage of loose play to dot down to score. Russell Murdoch converted, making the score 22-12 to Lasswade. The Reds were playing better rugby now and Jamie March was linking well with the rest of the backs. From a long speculative pass, well held by Guy Sutherland, his effort for the line was impeded by a dangerous and high tackle. The Referee awarded a penalty try to the Reds and the final score ended 22-19 to the home team.
Slightly disappointing for the Reds as we left a few points on the park and the players themselves know some of them were struggling for fitness in the heat and by the fast pace of the game. That said, Fraser Mochrie put in an amazing shift having just arrived home from his offshore job at 9.00pm on the Friday night. Well done to the Reds!
