2s Finally Get a Game in 2015
Grangemouth 2s 0 – 19 Linlithgow 2s
Saturday 31 January 2015
The first game for many of 2015 took place on a perfect pitch at Grangemouth with the Linlithgow Mains Park covered in snow.
The Reds started enthusiastically on the soft pitch, but the rustiness of the players after the festive lay off resulted in frequent break downs in play. Linlithgow club member and referee Ally MacLennan tried to keep the play flowing.
Chris Ronalson at standoff was keeping the ball in front of the pack and pushing the team forward. From a line out on the Grangemouth 22 the ball was won by Sean Hagarty, passed quickly by Robbie Thomson through the standoff and centres with Nicky Cowan sprinting to the line. Chris Ronalson converted beautifully to make the score 7-0 to the Reds.
Grangemouth tried hard but could not make a lot of headway and Linlithgow scored another nice try similar to the first one. This time Jeff Martin came into the line and James Timlin beat two men and scored in the corner. Chris Ronalson converted to leave the score 14-0 to the Reds at the break.
After the break Donald Bennie moved to no. 8 and added some control at this position supporting the scrum half well. Gus McNab and Duncan McClymont made some good runs with the ball and took the team forward into attacking positions which were often squandered.
Billy Edment, although debating most decisions made by the ref (!), was at the fore in most attacking moves and it was he who set up the ball for Nicky Cowan to make a lung bursting run from the Linlithgow 22 to score in the corner. The conversion was missed leaving the final score 19-0 to Linlithgow.
The manager was pleased with the performance of many in the team after such an enforced layoff. Hopefully the 2s will be in action again as soon as possible as we enter the home international fixtures which often cause mayhem with availability and selection.
